Personalized Medicine utilizes the genetics of an individual (or in cancer the genetics of a patient’s tumor) to predict if the patient is likely to have an adverse drug response or whether the drug may actually be useful to manage the patient’s conditions. One of the major gaps in adopting personalized medicine testing to benefit patients is the lack of education and training of pharmacists regarding when and how to utilize results from this testing to guide drug management.

Numerous publications have indicated that although physicians and pharmacists expect to use results of personalized medicine testing (pharmaco-genetics) in their practice, few are comfortable with their knowledge base of how genetics affects drug response and few are comfortable with interpreting results from pharmaco-genetic testing to enhance patient drug management.

This conference is an opportunity to bridge the gap of education, familiarity and experiential learning about use and application of these tests, including practical issues regarding:
- Identifying patients most likely to benefit from testing;
- Interpretation of results and application of results to guide drug management decisions (dose and/or choice of drugs);
- Reimbursement of testing;
- Integration of testing results into the patient’s medical record; and
- Resources to access to facilitate decision making and clinical application.
