On June 8, 2017, Vice Chancellor for Research Terry Magnuson officially approved UNC’s Code and Standard of Research Conduct. With his signature and concurrence by the Faculty Council and Policy Review Committee, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill joins other premier research universities in formalizing the high standards that it expects from members of the research community.
“We already enact these high standards everyday,” explains Magnuson, “with the choices we make in maintaining integrity through our words and actions.” The Vice Chancellor encourages research teams to read the Code and Standard, digest them, and make the policies their own.
Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Research Compliance Officer Robin Cyr serves as the contact person for the policies. “The Code and Standard of Research Conduct are great tools in communicating to new and existing employees how their behavior translates into the University’s mission, vision, and values for the research enterprise,” says Cyr. She adds that putting UNC’s expectations in writing fosters discussion about ethical decision-making that keeps the public’s and research subjects’ best interests front and center.
